What Actually Happens on a Northern Lights Chase

Before a single passenger is picked up, the guide has usually spent part of the afternoon comparing cloud radar, satellite imagery and the latest geomagnetic readings to work out where tonight's clearest sky is most likely to be found. That assessment is a well-informed working guess rather than a guarantee, because Arctic weather can shift meaningfully within a few hours. So the plan going into the evening is treated as a starting direction rather than a fixed destination, and it's genuinely common for the route to change more than once after the minibus is already on the road and new information comes in.
Why the drive itself is unpredictable
There's no standard distance for a chase, and no two nights look alike: some evenings the clear sky sits twenty minutes from central Tromsø, others require two hours or more of driving inland, and a particularly patchy forecast can mean crossing the border into Finland or Sweden to escape coastal cloud entirely. The uncertainty is really the trade-off for the higher odds a mobile tour offers over a fixed camp or viewpoint — you're paying, in effect, for a guide's judgement and a vehicle's mobility across a wide area, rather than for any single promised location on a map.
Dressing for hours of standing still in the cold
The technical problem isn't really the temperature itself so much as inactivity — standing outdoors for an hour or more loses body heat far faster than walking or hiking does, which is why layering matters more than any single heavy coat. Thermal base layers against the skin, an insulating mid-layer, and a wind-blocking outer shell, plus a warm hat, gloves and thick wool socks, do most of the actual work. The thermal suits and boots most tours lend on the night cover the outer layer well, but they work best worn over proper warm layers underneath, not as a substitute for them.
Why a phone camera struggles, and what works instead
The aurora is considerably fainter to a camera and to the eye than it looks in finished photos, and phone camera sensors generally can't gather enough light fast enough to capture it well once the sky is genuinely dark. A proper long exposure — typically a shutter held open for several seconds up to around fifteen seconds, a wide-open aperture, a higher ISO setting, and the camera locked completely still on a tripod — captures fine detail that the naked eye and a phone both miss entirely. That's exactly why guide-taken long-exposure photos usually look noticeably more vivid and colourful than what guests remember actually seeing with their own eyes.
The waiting is real, and it's part of the deal
A chase night involves genuine stretches of standing around in the cold looking at a dark sky that isn't doing very much at all — the aurora doesn't perform on any fixed schedule, and a slow build from a faint, easy-to-miss grey-green arc to a full dancing display can take a long time, or in some cases simply not happen that particular night. Guides use the quieter gaps for hot drinks, a campfire, and explaining what to actually look for in the sky. But the patience required really is real, and it's worth knowing that going in rather than expecting constant, non-stop action all evening.
